This post is a comparison review on the Motif Luna vs Spectra S2.
If there is one thing that you may have heard about Motif Luna is that it is, essentially, the same as the Spectra S2.
But is it really? Keep on reading to find out.
Motif Luna vs Spectra S2
The Motif Luna and Spectra S2 seem to have a lot of similarities. But what makes them different?
Motif Luna is a breast pump, that like the Spectra, has been around for many years and many women have used during their pumping journey.
In this article, I will cover their differences such as price, settings, and features to see which one best suits your needs.
Motif Luna vs Spectra S2
Motif Luna vs Spectra S2 Breast Pump: Price
The Spectra S2 and the Motif Luna have about $30 price difference, with Motif Luna coming up cheaper than the Spectra.
If price is something that is important to you due to your budget, getting the Motif Luna is a good choice because it is still considered one of the best breast pumps out in the market.
Motif Luna: $145 USD
Spectra: $172 USD
Motif Luna vs Spectra S2 Breast Pump: Covered by Health Insurance
Both the Motif Luna and Spectra S2 are covered by the majority of health insurances. This is the reason why so many woman have had access to either the Spectra or Motif Luna. Furthermore, regardless of your budget, receiving a free ~$200 breast pump is quite a blessing.
Also, even if your health insurance does not cover either of these breast pumps, more likely than not, it will cover portion of the breast pump and have you pay a fee, which should be a reduced price from the original price of the breast pump.
Motif Luna: Yes, most health insurances offer it for free
Spectra: Yes, most health insurances offer it for free
Motif Luna vs Spectra S2 Breast Pump: Settings
I believe this is what makes people believe and say that Motif Luna and Spectra are the same pump.
Their pump settings are exactly the same, in terms of massage and expression mode, as well as their levels for the vacuum strength and speed cycle.
Despite their settings being very very similar, no two pumps are the same, after all, they are a different brand.

Spectra: Vacuum suction up to L12
Motif Luna vs Spectra S2 Breast Pump: Single or Double Pump Capability
Both the Motif Luna and Spectra allow for women to either single pump or double pump. This capability is extremely important because it allows for the pump to pump both breasts at the same time, which is convenient for moms pumping when they are away from baby and need to pump within 30 minutes at work.
Without the double pump capability, what would take 30 minutes would take 60 minutes instead!
Furthermore, the ability to switch it from single to dual and from dual to single makes it convenience for the mom whose baby only ate from one breast and needs to relieve the other breast from engorgement.
Motif Luna: Yes, both
Spectra: Yes, both
Motif Luna vs Spectra S2 Breast Pump: Hospital-Grade Strength
In order for the breast pump to be considered hospital grade strength, it means that it has a strong enough motor comparable to the breast pumps hospital provide their patients, such as the Medela Symphony.
If you regularly use a breast pump, your main pump should be one that is considered hospital grade strength. The reason for that is because these pumps are more effective in milk output than those that are not, and therefore, when milk is not properly extracted, it can result in low milk supply and/or mastitis.
Motif Luna: No
Spectra: Yes
Motif Luna vs Spectra S2 Breast Pump: Portable
Both the Motif Luna and the Spectra S2 are not portable. They each need to be plugged in to the outlet for the pump to work.
Luckily(?) for us, they both have a sister pump, Motif Luna with Battery and Spectra S1, that are 100% portable and come with a rechargeable battery.
Motif Luna: No (But Motif Luna does offer Motif Luna with Battery, which is 100% portable)
Spectra: No (But Spectra does offer Spectra S1, which is 100% portable)

Motif Luna vs Spectra S2 Breast Pump: Weight
You may be wondering why weight is important enough to be in this list.
I include the weight of these breast pumps because many women use breast pumps in their workplace. This means that these women will have to carry their breast pump day in and day out.
The added weight of the breast pump can be pretty significant in the long run, and depending on how long the commute may be.
There is less than one pound difference between these two breast pumps.
Motif Luna: 2 lbs
Spectra: 2.5 lbs
