This post is about the best homemade baby wipes recipe to use alongside cloth diapers.

If you are here, chances are, you have considered or are using cloth diapers as well.

Cloth diapers and DIY homemade baby wipes go hand-in-hand.

The reason this combo is commonly used, is because when you are doing your cloth diaper laundry, you can also throw in your DIY baby wipes in the load.

Therefore, they become an item that is low effort and requires minimal prep and clean up.

Homemade baby wipes can be intimidating, specially if you are in Facebook cloth diaper and/or crunchy mom groups.

I cannot tell you how many times I’ve seen people asking for help and ask why their DIY baby wipes are moldy or why they dried out.

I saw those posts and my immediate thought is, “I really don’t want to deal with mold…”

But I am here to tell you that that does not have to be your case.

Why Should You Consider Making Your Own Baby Wipes

I’m a big advocate for reducing waste and lowering our footprint on this plant.

By using homemade baby wipes regularly, you will:

  • Save money
  • Reduce waste
  • Prevent butt rashes
  • Reuse fabric (such as old cotton t-shirts)

Best Homemade Baby Wipes Recipe

While there are many alternatives to making your very own baby wipes at home, you will typically need:

Cloth Wipes: You can buy the cloth wipes already prepped to be used as homemade baby wipes. If you would like a least expensive option, you can cut old cotton t-shirts into squares to use. You can also buy fabric from a fabric store, such as Michaels.

Water: The water will be used to add moisture to the baby wipes to aid in wiping your baby’s bottom.

Essential Oils: Essential oil are great to add into the water to dilute it and to add fragrance to your homemade baby wipes. You can use the essential oil of your preference, such as orange or lavender. Use only 10 drops per portion.

Coconut Oil: Coconut oil is used to moisturize. If you’d like to substitute coconut oil for something else, you can also use Olive oil.

Homemade Baby Wipes: Spray Bottle Recipe

To prep the diy baby wipe solution, mix the following in a spray bottle:

  • 2 cups of water
  • 10 drops of the essential oil of your choice
  • 1 tsp of coconut oil

After you mix the homemade cloth wipe solution into the spray bottle, you can spray the cloth wipes as you go. This will prevent any mold to grow on the wipes.

Homemade Baby Wipes: Plastic Baby Wipes Dispenser Recipe

To prep the diy baby wipe solution, mix the following in a bowl:

  • 2 cups of water
  • 10 drops of the essential oil of your choice
  • 1 tsp of coconut oil

Once you have the diy cloth wipe solution ready, fold your cloth wipes into a plastic baby wipes dispenser and then add the homemade baby wipes solution over the cloth wipes.

So, like disposable baby wipes, when you need to use a homemade baby wipe, it already has the baby wipe solution.

How Long Do DIY Baby Wipes Last

If you choose to go the spray bottle route: the DIY baby wipes will last as long as the solution lasts on the spray bottle. This is about 1-3 weeks.

If you choose to go to baby wipes container route: If you are choose to submerge your cloth wipes in the homemade baby wipe solution and store them in a plastic baby wipe container, then they will last about 2-4 days. Any longer than that may result in mold.

Due to the unfamiliarity with diy homemade cloth wipes, it can be intimidating adding them to your household.

But as seen above, in order to make your own baby wipes and baby wipes solution, you only need a handful of ingredients, most of which you probably already have at home.

If it came down to it, you could literally just use water in your baby wipes. Try not to overthink it.

Rule of thumb is: water, cloth wipes, and not letter the wipes sit longer than 3 days in the baby wipe solution, whether that is the recipe above, or just water.
