Best Board Books For Babies That They Will Love to Read

This post is about the best board books for babies that they will read for years.

Throughout my pregnancy, I remember opening Facebook Marketplace so many times a day every day in search for discounted baby items.

Some baby items that I was on the search for were a baby bouncer, and, you guessed it, children’s books.

I am an avid reader (which resulted in a love for writing, as you can tell by this blog), so I knew I wanted to share that passion with my daughter when she was born.

I was selective about the books I got her because I am the type of person that thinks, “If I’m going to get it, I am going to make it last.”

So with that mentality, I got her books that she could use as a baby all the way into toddlerhood.

In this article, I have included children’s board book that are high contrast, interactive, early concepts, and touch & feel.

Through a mixture of these books in your baby’s first library, you can guarantee that they will find a book to read every day depending on their mood.

Benefits of Board Books for Babies

I highly advocate and recommend board books for babies due to the multiple benefits they have on them, such as:

1. Durability: Board books are made with sturdy, thick pages that can withstand rough handling by babies. They are designed to withstand chewing, tearing, and bending, making them more durable than regular books.

2. Sensory stimulation: Board books often feature bright colors, bold illustrations, and different textures that engage a baby’s senses. Babies can touch and feel the pages, enhancing their sensory development.

3. Interactive experience: Board books often include interactive elements such as flaps to lift, tabs to pull, or buttons to press. These interactive features encourage babies to actively participate in the reading experience, promoting their fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.

4. Language development: Reading board books to babies exposes them to language and helps develop their vocabulary. The repetitive and rhythmic text in board books can also aid in language acquisition and early literacy skills.

5. Bonding time: Reading board books with babies provides an opportunity for caregivers to bond with them. The close physical proximity and shared experience of reading can strengthen the caregiver-child relationship and create positive associations with books and reading.

6. Introduction to storytelling: Board books often feature simple narratives or concepts that introduce babies to the world of storytelling. This early exposure to narratives can foster a love for reading and storytelling as they grow older.

High Contrast Board Books for Babies

When my daughter was born, I made sure to have at least one of these on hand. I remember my mom made fun of me when I tried to show my daughter the book as a 3 week old (haha). She started showing slight interest around 2 months, and she loved it until she was 6 months old.

Interactive Board Books for Babies

These books offer a variety of stimulations for baby. From peek-a-boo books to finger puppet books, your baby will be loving these all the way until they become toddlers!

Peek Through Board Books

The Very Hungry Caterpillar at the Bakeshop offers baby familiarity as they begin to know the very hungry caterpillar universe!

Ocean: A Peek-Through Board Book will teach your babies about fish, and as they grow older, they can begin identifying the types of fish and counting how many fish are in the page.

Bee: A Peek-Through Board Book is from the same author as the book above. With beautiful graphics, these books teach babies and toddlers about nature in a way that every time your baby and/or toddler brings this book out, they can learn and note an additional item on the pages.

Lift the Flap

Animals: 5 Flaps to Flip! is one of the many books that can begin teaching babies object permanence. Furthermore, babies love anything peek-a-boo!

Flip Flap Find! Farm: Lift the flaps! Who’s Hiding on the Farm? is not only a peek-a-boo book with flaps, but also has all of the farm animals! This interactive book will be sure to teach your baby about animals.

Vroom and Zoom is a book that we have in our household in Spanish. I absolutely love it because it covers all forms of transportation, which has been so useful now that my daughter is almost 2 years old. She recognizes the vehicles when on the road and when we do pretend play; she begins naming the vehicles, as well as making their corresponding sounds.

Pull-a-tab

Splish, Splash!: Slide-and-Seek may be a little difficult for small babies, but like the peek-a-boo books, babies will surely enjoy the surprise that comes when pulling the tab!

Slide and Seek First Words is both a pull-a-tab book and an early concept book, which means that not only will baby eventually learn how to pull the tab themselves, but they will also learn the words/objects in the book.

See, Touch, Feel: Trucks and Things That Go: A Noisy Pull-Tab Book introduces the various types of trucks in a two-in-one board book. As part of the See, Touch, Feel board books, this book allows babies to pull tabs and also feel different textures in the pages.

Poke-A-Dot

Small Poke A Dot: First Colors is perfect for on the go and for little fingers!

Poke-A-Dot: Old MacDonald’s is a book we bought when my daughter had just turned one and we still love it! I just regret not knowing about it sooner!

Poke-a-Dot books helps babies and toddlers work on their fine motor skills and identifying skills.

Finger Puppets

Mommy and Me Finger Puppet Book is the perfect bonding book for babies. This book is not only visually stimulating for babies, but also teaches babies the concept of mom and baby.

Baby Narwhal: Finger Puppet Book is simple, entertaining, and introduces babies to one of the most popular kid’s books.

I Am Little Fish! A Finger Puppet Book provides happy times for baby as they can’t help but giggle every time mom or dad moves the finger puppet as they are reading the book.

Early Concepts Board Books for Babies

First 100 Animals uses realistic pictures to teach your baby all about animals. Furthermore, this board book is also padded, which makes it totally okay for teething babies to much on (while waiting for an actual teether).

Baby Animals by Priddy books offers a realistic feel of animals’ fur. This is a great book to teach babies “gentle hands” to be delicate when touching animals.

Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? Slide and Find is both interactive with the sliding pages and keeps baby entertained with it’s rhyme and melody.

First 100 Padded: Numbers, Colors, Shapes is similar to First 100 Animals mentioned above, but this one focuses on numbers. What I personally love about this book is that you can also use it to not only teach numbers, but also object identification. And as baby gets older, you can begin teaching them how to count.

Baby Touch and Feel: Bedtime offers different textures on its pages to teach babies all about having a bedtime routine.

Pop-Up Peekaboo! Colors: Pop-Up Surprise Under Every Flap! has textured flaps to help baby stay focused on the book and is interactive in more ways than one.

Eating the Alphabet: Fruits & Vegetables from A to Z teaches babies all about their fruits and veggies. This helps babies, and eventually toddlers, learn that there are so many different types of fruits and vegetables. Also, if they eat what they see in the book, they will get excited identifying them!

Touch & Feel Board Books for Babies

First Steps Baa Baa! Touch and Feel Board Book has different animal “fur” textures to teach baby to learn the difference in how animals feel. This book offers a great opportunity to teach your little one about “gentle hands” when it comes to animals.

You’re My Little Baby: A Touch-and-Feel Book also has flaps. I am also convinced this book is meant to make any hormonal mom cry (I know I have (multiple times….)).

See, Touch, Feel: A First Sensory Book offers a wide variety of textures throughout the book. It is basically an all-in-one book for sensory input for babies. It even has a mirror on the last page, which is perfect if your little one is doing tummy time.

Noisy Baby Animals: My First Touch and Feel Sound Book is another two-in-one book. My daughter gravitates to these books even now because she is able to independently press the button now. Talk about a book that grows with you!

Never Touch a Dinosaur! is part of a book series as well. “Never Touch A” book series offers rhymes and a different types of textures in the book via silicone. I must admit that not many board books use these same textures.

Alphaprints: Sweet Heart: A Touch-and-Feel Book gives slight fingertip stimulation for babies and toddlers. The texture is soft yet realistic.

I also wanted to share some results we have had in our household with board books.

Many of the books you see my daughter reading in the three pictures above are books she has had since she was 6 months old. I am a proud mama bear when I catch just reading randomly, which is why I always take a picture when I see it.

Furthermore, I also believe that her being around books from when she was a newborn until now, has allowed her to develop her language skills as much as she has. I know every kid develops differently, but I was very intentional with how much I read and spoke to her.

At 18 months she was at 100 words. And as of me writing this, she is 1 month away (23 months old) from turning 2 years old, and she speaks in sentences of about 4 words or more (we stopped counting words once she hit the 100-word milestone).

If you are interested in how I helped her reach these milestones, read more on: How to Raise a Child Who Loves to Read.
